about waters

Hi, I’m Matt Waters. Nice to meet you.

I arrived in Washington, D.C. back in 1989.  It was a really different town then. After graduating from college, I went to work for one of the best known political fundraising firms in the country at the time.  I learned what to do, and perhaps just as important, what not to do.  Times have certainly changed.  Not only is D.C. a more sophisticated town, so is fundraising.  Fundraising in 1989 was far easier.  Back then there was no Internet, no email campaigns, no cookies following you, no spam laws, no pop-ups, no cell phones and none of the apps we cannot live without today.  D.C. in 1989 was affordable, still a Southern city by most accounts, the national debt was just under $3 trillion, CPAC had less than 500 attendees, and the Reagan Administration had just drawn to a close.

Today, fundraising is a 24/7 professional enterprise–consisting of mail, snail-mail and e-mail, major gift and foundation fundraising, public service announcements (PSAs), events, robo-calls and other telemarketing, Text-to-Text, crowdfunding, rev-shares, sweepstakes and more. D.C. is no longer a sleepy Southern city–it has joined the ranks of other 24/7 cities, wherein the Federal government is the nation’s largest employer at 10 million employees (surpassing the private sectors’ largest employer, Walmart, at 1.5 million employees), the national debt crossing an unsustainable $25 trillion, CPAC has over 20,000 in attendance, and it is the #1 most expensive city in the USA to raise a family.  And, did I mention that Washington added a major league baseball team that won its first World Series since 1924?

Over the last three decades we have evolved, learned, and kept pace with the new opportunities and challenges your organization is confronting. Our clients, which are kept entirely confidential, have stayed with us on average 10 or more years.  Two reasons why: 1. we’re really good at raising money; 2. we do it at a cost that cannot be beat by our competition.

If you need help raising money, we’re here to help. Give us a call and we’ll shoot straight.

Hire a Team of Experienced Fundraisers

Collectively, the Waters.Agency has over 50 years experience serving several national non-profit organizations. I have personally served as Vice President, Director of Development, Major Gift Officer and Executive Director.  Others on the team have held titles such as Senior Account Manager, Director of Non-Profit Fund Raising, and Vice President of New Business Development. That’s why we understand very well why the direct marketing agencies that have big offices in big buildings with big staffs, are among the most expensive in the country.

Our team has also been privy to the internal workings of the non-profit organization–the high turnover, the lack of a cohesive vision and strategy, and multiple departments who don’t understand what the development office is up to or attempting to accomplish for the organization, the massive leadership challenges, and, well, you get the picture. There is almost no scenario with which we are not familiar.

What does this mean for you? This: If your development program or office is under-performing, digital is not talking to print, major gifts are not happening, the creative is dull, costs are high, and you want (and need) an honest fundraising team, then let’s have a conversation.

So what can Waters.Agency do for you? For starters, we can lower your cost per new name, we can increase your ROI, and we can definitely save you money. Our fundraising machine will generate leads to feed your Major Gift Officers and Planned Giving. Our fundraising machine will present new and responsible creative, creative that works (i.e. raises money). We will create a national program, generate buzz, connect your digital and print fundraising mediums. And we think you will like us.

I can be reached at mw@waters.agency.

If your development program or office is under-performing, or major gifts are not happening, the creative is dull, costs are high, and you want (and need) an honest fundraiser, then let’s meet!
